The Gallery Interview John Askew November 09

DJ Interview Questions

Please return to tom@thegallery-club.co.uk
Where and how does The Gallery find you on this fine day?
Well thanks. I’m sat in my dressing gown in front of the telly having just got back from Australia and New Zealand Tour this morning. 50 hours of flying in 6 days. Killer. Having the day off today - and yet here I am on line talking to you...
You are playing this coming Friday at The Gallery at Ministry of Sound, what can we expect from you?
A complete violation of the senses is what I am hoping to play but I’m not sure at the moment. The crowd at MOS don’t always like it as hard as the old crowd at Turnmills did, but lets see what happens.
Which 3 to 5 tracks, if forced to pick them, really sum up 2009 for you?
John Askew “Vandalism”
Adam Foley “Fourteen Falls”
Activa “Transmission”
Which djs / producers have really caught your eye and ear this year and are destined for bigger things in 2010?
Activa, Gary Maguire, Sly One vs Jurrane, Adam Foley, Akesson, Mike Nichol, Reaky.
What have you got in the pipeline that is coming up in the next few months?
I’ve just released my new double cd mix album for Digital Society – which you can buy from all the usual shops and download stores or order direct from www.enhancedrecordings.com and my new single called “Bad Apple” is also out now and can you bought from all the usual download stores. At the moment I am working on an EP for Aly & Fila’s label Future Sound of Egypt as well as putting together ideas for a new artist album.
What will you be doing this festive period and New Years?
I’m having another baby in January so I am planning on taking 3 months off from travelling and djing from January onwards (with the exception of 2 or three things that are already confirmed) but as from Christmas I will be doing an extended set at the Ekwador club in Poland on Boxing day which will be massive and then on New Years eve I will be in the UK - playing first at Passion in Coalville and then closing the night for Gatecrasher at Syndicate in Blackpool.
What is top of your Xmas Present wish list this year?
A 1989 Skyway BMX.
What is the worst present you have ever received and why?
Tickets to go to the train museum in York.
Looking back over 2009 can you pick out a few really special / poignant moments or events?
The South American Music Conference was incredible as was playing at 5 hour set at Privilege in Buenos Aries. I really enjoyed my gig in New Zealand on Saturday night and the last time I played in Los Angeles at Circus had a great atmosphere. Oh, and Digital Society in the UK is always mind blowing.
And what are you most looking forward to in 2010?
Meeting my new daughter for the first time has to be high on the list and I’m really really looking forward to have some proper time off from travelling which will be the first time I have done that in over a decade.
